This website describes the work of RIAH, particularly in breeding new sheep breeds. These combine the hardiness of native breeds with the improved characteristics of imported breeds. An example is the Orhon sheep, with finer wool than indigenous breeds with their coarse fleece, but able to survive outdoors on native pasture and adapted to the harsh environmental conditions of Mongolia. The Jargalant fat-tailed sheep is another improved hardy cross bred by the Institute.
