This book describes a sustainable farming system for resource poor farmers in slopeland areas which combines livestock and cropping. This integrated farming system provides farm households with a food supply and some cash income, while maintaining and increasing the productivity of slopeland soils. The first part of the book consists of selected papers presented during the “International Training Workshop on Crop-Livestock Integration in Slopeland Areas”, held in 1997 at the Asian Rural Life Development Foundation in Davao del Sur, Philippines. The second part is a compilation of abstracts of papers presented at several international meetings on crop-livestock integration in slopelands sponsored by FFTC. These meetings were conducted in response to the crisis situation seen in many slopeland areas of Asia. Inappropriate farming practices, overgrazing and deforestation are causing widespread soil degradation and erosion. Crop-livestock integration is a way of reversing this trend, while meeting the needs of small-scale farmers.
