Upland rice is an important food crop in highland areas of Vietnam. Forty three upland rice varieties, originating from Lang Son, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Da Nang and Tay Nguyen, were supplied by the Gene Bank Division of the Vietnam Agricultural Science Institute, so we could identify the rice types based on the isozymes. The results showed that 18 varieties belonged to the Japonica group and 15 varieties to the Indica group, while ten varieties had enzyme combinations which belonged to the Indica group except for Amp 1 enzyme.
More than ten hybrid pairs of upland rice varieties with highly pleiomorphic morphology and molecules were crossed for varietal screening, and a molecular map was drawn up. Hybrid seeds from F1 to F7 of five hybrid pairs were collected. Diplo-haplont hybrid seeds obtained by F1 anther culture of hybrid pairs were also collected. Evaluation of several hybrid lines was undertaken in a greenhouse at the Experimental Station of Thai Nguyen University. Twenty to thirty lines from each breeding population were selected for further evaluation, so that we could screen promising lines for varietal experiments.
Six breeding populations were created for possible molecular linkage mapping. Of these, three populations are populations from self-recombination, while three others are diplo-haplontic. Each population has 100 _ 200 hybrid lines.
