This machine was modified from the machine used for dehairing pigs after slaughter (Fig. 1). It can be used in tropical or subtropical developing countries where goat meat is an important food.
The machine is made up of three parts. The first part is a water tank, using water heated to 65oC. The goat carcass is soaked in the tank for about four minutes, to make the hair easier to remove (Fig. 2).
The second part is a roller with steel bars and a high-pressure water spray, to remove hair from the goat.
The third part is a platform structure where hair can be cleaned out of the machine and the carcass cut up.
Although costs will differ from one country to another, in Taiwan this machine is very cost effective (Table 1). Using the manual dehairing method, it costs US$12.00 and takes 86 minutes to slaughter a goat. However, it costs only U$2.63 and takes only 18.5 minutes to slaughter a goat using the automatic dehairing machine.
The roller with steel bars was designed for separating the hair from the skin quickly, and the water spray equipment was designed to flush out the hair easily from the machine.
The temperature of the water tank must be kept at 65oC, and the goat carcass must be soaked for four minutes. Otherwise, it will be difficult to remove the goat hair.
