MR. Sing-Hwa Hu Returns to Public Service As Vice-Minister of Taiwan's Agriculture Council
During his 3 ½ years of service as Director of FFTC (November 2004 - May 2008), Mr. Hu provided an inspiring and dynamic leadership which enabled the Center to further achieve its goal of advancing scientific and technological development in agriculture in the Asian region. He spearheaded the implementation of the Center's work programs and activities aiming to continually address the needs of small-scale farmers by promoting modern and practical information and technology toward contributing to the creation of a genuinely interdependent regional sustainable agriculture.
A fisheries and aquaculture expert, Mr. Hu served as Director-General of the Fisheries Agency, COA prior to his appointment at FFTC, and has held several key positions in the past at the Department of Agriculture and Forestry (provincial government) and the Taiwan Fisheries Bureau. Among his many accomplishments from his years of dedicated service at the Fisheries Agency are the following: promotion of fishery resource conservation and responsible fisheries; development of high-value cobia species; establishment of 44 aquaculture production areas within Taiwan adopting the Good Aquaculture Practice (GAP); and promotion of recreational fishing such as whale watching and multi-purpose harbor development.
In view of Mr. Hu's return to public service, FFTC Deputy Director Dr. Hideo Imai has been designated as Acting Director to ensure the smooth operation and conduct of the Center's work programs and activities until a new Director is selected.
