In the Asian and Pacific Region, the potential of timely and relevant scientific and technological information in agriculture is so vast and far-reaching. With its limited land and rapid population growth, future increases in agricultural production in the region will have to rely more on technological improvement amid its ever-shrinking and generally deteriorating natural resource base. Information is vital in terms of enabling our small-scale farmers to achieve improved agricultural productivity, make effective use of the natural resources, raise their income, and produce food that is accessible, available and affordable to all. For us at the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC), serving small-scale farmers by bringing them information on improved agricultural technology is an evolving task and a continuing commitment. The ultimate mission of FFTC is to promote increased information and technological exchanges among countries in the region in support of their development efforts and to contribute to the creation of a genuinely interdependent regional sustainable agriculture. The FFTC Annual Report 2005 highlights our work program and initiatives in pursuit of this goal, amid more daunting challenges as well as vast opportunities arising from the promise of globalization contrasting with the disquieting reality of the stubbornly high numbers of hungry and poor people in the region. The FFTC Annual Report 2005 is a testament to our Center's steadfast commitment to address our small-scale farmers' basic need for practical information and technology — a key component that will render Asian agriculture more productive, resilient, sustainable, and equitable amid the challenges of an ever-changing world. We will not relent on our commitment to collect and disseminate information on improved agricultural technology, in order to contribute to the attainment of a broad-based economic growth, sustainable food security, poverty alleviation, and overall development of the region. With the support and commitment of our Center's staff and that of all our members and partners, it is my privilege to continue to lead FFTC in giving our small-scale farmers in the Asian and Pacific region new hope and better prospects in the face of emerging challenges in the years to come.
